WhatsApp Business API (the platform tier)

The WhatsApp Business API is not an app - it's a connection that lets software send and receive WhatsApp messages. It enables automation, shared team inboxes, CRM integration, chatbots and bulk messaging within WhatsApp's rules.

You need it when:

  • More than one person needs to read and reply. The app can't share a single number across a team.
  • You want to automate responses or routing. A new lead should create a CRM record and notify someone, not sit in one person's phone.
  • You want WhatsApp inside your existing tools. Messages should appear in your CRM or helpdesk, not only on a phone.

The API is accessed through a provider (a Business Solution Provider) and is priced per conversation, not a flat fee.

How to decide

  • One person, a few chats a day: the free Business app.
  • A team, growing volume, or the need to automate: the API, through a provider.
  • Unsure: start with the app. Moving to the API later doesn't lose your number.

What to be careful of

Don't buy the API because "automation" sounds valuable. If your volume doesn't justify it, the provider fees and setup cost more than the time saved. And don't use unofficial tools that promise bulk WhatsApp sending outside the official API - they risk your number being banned.
